01. The Lost Child

SUMMARY


in the story 'The lost child', the author highlights a child's love for his parents. It is a story about a young child who gets attracted by things around him, on the way to the fair. In the fair, he wants many things. He knows that his parents would refuse and so he moves ahead. When he gets separated from his parents, all those things do not tempt him. The only thing that he wanted that time was his parents.

Q1. What are the things the child sees on his way to the fair? Why does he lag behind?

Ans – The child first see on his way a toy shop, dragon flies, a shower of young flowers, a a sweetmeat seller, a garland of gulmohar, a man stood holding a pole with colourful ballons and see snake-charmer stood playing a flute etc. He lag behind because he gets attract towards these things.

Q2. In the fair he wants many things. What are they? Why does he move on without waiting for an answer?

Ans – In the fair the child wants to have toys, barfi, garland of gulmohur, ballon of different colour, a snake charmer playing a flute to a snake etc. He move on without waiting for an answer from his parents because he knew that his parents would refuse to buy these thing.

Q3. When does he realise that he has lost his way? How have his anxiety and insecurity been described?

Ans – The child realises that he has lost his way, when he stopes at the roundabout and wants to have a ride on it. He made a bold request to his parents “I want to go on the roundabout, please, Father, Mother.” But there was no reply. He turned to look at his parents. They were not there, ahead of him. He turned to look on either side. They were not there. He looked behind. There was no sign of them. At that time he realises that he has lost his way.

Q4. Why does the lost child lose interest in the things that he had wanted earlier?

Ans – The lost child loses his interest in the things that he wanted earlier because he was panic – stricken on being seperated from his parents. All he wanted was to be united with his parents. All the things attracted him in the fair no longer appeal to him and now the only thing that matter is finding his parents.

Q5. What do you think happens in the end? Does the child find his parents?

Ans – I think in the end of this story the lost child found his parents. The kind – hearted person who tried to control that little boy had helped the boy to find his parents. On the other hand the parents of the child were also searched him when they would have realized that he is not with them.

SUMMARY This is a story of a mischievous monkey. The writer's grandfather liked to collect animals and had a zoo at home. Once he bought a monkey named Toto from a tonga driver for a sum of five rupees. Toto was kept secretly as the writer's grandmother disliked animals. Toto was a very mischievous monkey. When the writer and his grandfather hid Toto in a cupboard, and tied him to a hook, he broke the hook and caused havoc in the room. The next day, when he was kept in the servants room along with other animals, he did not let them sleep all night. As writer's grandfather had to go to Saharanpur for work, he decided to take the monkey along with him.
